I hope some of my British friends can explain this curious dessert from England that I saw in my local grocery store this week. I suspect it has appeared in some Monty Python and Benny Hill bits at some time or other...

  1. I am not your friend but I can explain it. Dick, in English English, does not mean penis, as it does in the US. For a detailed explanation, why didn't you go to Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotted_dick?

  2. Maybe Sto a/k/a Jonathan Perrins or Mark Bridges can explain this curiously named British dessert that I saw in my local grocery store this week? I suspect it has appeared in some Monty Python and Benny Hill bits at some time or other...

Regan J Curran I've always enjoyed that you can buy spotting dick in a can, also that you cook it in the can. That can't possibly be safe.

Mark Bridges Jesus you pay a lot for Spotted Dick. As for explaining it, its a sponge dessert with raisans and saultanas, usually served warm with custard. As for the Name, no idea what they were thinking.
:) Makes me think of the symptoms of an STI.

Jonathan Perrins I've never had it, or seen it served, but I've heard the name enough times. I think it's a regional thing like Brains Faggots, and nearly as fantastically named.

Mark Bridges Dont Remember Brains Faggots being a regional thing most supermarkets have them through out the country. Unlike Hendersons Relish which is a South Yorkshire thing, as is Parkin. Lancashires Butter Pies make no sence is there potato pies. Go Figure.

As for spotted dick they used to serve it at primary school/kindergarten with golden syrup, and its bloody horrible.

Jonathan Perrins I never saw it in my stomping grounds of S. London, but it may have been hidden away for country folk away from home! That's my guess at least, based on the heavily accented tv ads from my youth, touting the hard work of Mr Brains and his wonder faggots.

Mark Bridges If only he was able to foresee the issues that name would have in later years. :)
