Poem: Ephemeral Communications

click to enlarge Frederick Remington's Smoke Signals

Native American smoke signals
May be the most transitory
And ephemeral communication of all,

Next to the voice
—A whisper
In your ear—

That transmogrifies instantly
Into memory
While the smoke signal

Takes its own sweet time
Rising
And drifting slowly and inexorably

Toward Heaven,
Achieving evanescence
Somewhere in the troposphere.
