According to a Reuters/Zogby poll released today, Republican John McCain has opened up a 5-point lead on Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race. McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.
"There is no doubt the campaign to discredit Obama is paying off for McCain right now," pollster John Zogby said. "This is a significant ebb for Obama."
I can't tell you how many Democrats have told me over the last few months that this race is in the bag. Unfortunately, it appears to be the air-sickness bag. I remember when McGovern, Humphrey, Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry had it "in the bag." Laugh all you want about John McCain. . .he is a threat and the threat will only grow stronger as some degree of Obama fatigue inevitably sets in (and/or he makes his first serious mistakes).

I shouldn't be surprised. Most of my family is sure Obama is still trying to his Muslim heritage.

Well, it's tight, it was never going to be easy, but breathe, this is a Zogby poll and, well, zogby is not exactly a top shelf pollster. Others looking at the crosstabs have uncovered some pretty bad assumptions in this poll. That said, I don't know how anyone could have thought that this would be blowout for Obama but remember that he beat HRC when virtually no one on earth thought that would be possible. He has a very competent team and despite the frenzied demands that he go nuclear, I trust that they know what they're doing. Remember that this and other polls cover the period that included Obama's vacation while McMetamucil has been dropping all of his primary cash that must be spent before the GOP convention in a negative assault. Obama is just starting to roll out tough ads on McGaffe's privilege and his cluelessness on the economy. The narrative turns beginning next week.
The scary thing that I read on Huff post yesterday was this theory about how white people say they are going to vote for a black candidate in the polls, then go for the white guy when they vote. They call it the Bradley effect because of what happened when Tom Bradley ran for governor of California - white voters told pollsters they would vote for him, for fear of appearing racist if they did not, but then voted for his white opponent in the election. The writer cites many such examples.

I can only hope that American voters are smarter than to vote for a continuation of the past 8 years robber baron govt., but I have to say I lost a lot of faith in the American public and the electoral process in 2004.

Well, Kev, last night on Hardball and Verdict, pundits (and somr smart ones) claimed Hillary may be back on the short list due to recent polls that show her running better against McCain than Obama.
They also pointed out Obama is a pragmatist...no matter what he thinks (or for that matter what Michelle thinks) if it helps his chances, he would pick Hillary. And then reference The Dingbat's comments yesterday! Yikes. Buty I think old Pablo Fanque was right. It is smilin' Joe, and that is the right decision (althoughI admit, I'd prefer him as Pres with Obama in the second seat).
Or will we just elect McLame?
Daryle - I lost a little faith in the electorate too. But how are we ever going to run people out of office with the likes of Michael Dukakis, and John Kerry fronting the ticket?
The public may be dumb, but democracts are "Dumberer" since we inevitably nominate someone who ends being unfavborably compared to the likes of Dick Nixon, The Bushes, and Ronald Reagan.
Well, Jackie, I don't think Barack is Dukakis or Kerry though I am far less critical of Kerry than you are. If the Dems pull together at the convention and the Clintons do better than just play nice things should turn around.
But, let's grow the list for McFeeble.
