I hope some of my British friends can explain this curious dessert from England that I saw in my local grocery store this week. I suspect it has appeared in some Monty Python and Benny Hill bits at some time or other...

I am not your friend but I can explain it. Dick, in English English, does not mean penis, as it does in the US. For a detailed explanation, why didn't you go to Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotted_dick?

Mark Bridges Jesus you pay a lot for Spotted Dick. As for explaining it, its a sponge dessert with raisans and saultanas, usually served warm with custard. As for the Name, no idea what they were thinking. :) Makes me think of the symptoms of an STI. 13 hours ago · LikeUnlike · .

Mark Bridges Dont Remember Brains Faggots being a regional thing most supermarkets have them through out the country. Unlike Hendersons Relish which is a South Yorkshire thing, as is Parkin. Lancashires Butter Pies make no sence is there potato pies. Go Figure.
As for spotted dick they used to serve it at primary school/kindergarten with golden syrup, and its bloody horrible.

Jonathan Perrins I never saw it in my stomping grounds of S. London, but it may have been hidden away for country folk away from home!
