David Bowie covers one of the great rock tunes of all time - Waterloo Sunset

By Jack Brummet, British Music Ed.

David Bowie covers what I think is one of the 10 greatest rock songs of all time. Bowie recently wrote the notes for an upcoming Kinks compilation, and wrote "I've never heard a Kinks song that I didn't like".

Happy 67th Birthday to Ray Davies!

By Jack Brummet
Pop Editor

Happy 67th Birthday to Ray Davies, one of my great musical heroes.  The video below is a wonderful performance of one of his greatest songs, from last summer at Glastonbury.

The Zombies - video: Tell Her No

I like about five Zombies songs. I never totally bought the critical acclaim for Odyssey and Oracle. It's kind of like Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, where after you listen once or twice, all you can say is huh? I fit them in with other bands like Paul Revere, or Herman's Hermits, who also recorded up to 10 really good songs. Here's one of them.

Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here - Lyrics and video

Back in the day, and even up to a couple of years ago, I didn't pay much attention to Pink Floyd. I was absorbed by Zappa, CSNY, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Doors, The Band, Hendrix, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Dylan, and The Grateful Dead. Since then, I have learned that these guys actually mattered a great deal. "Wish you were here" is my favorite song by Pink Floyd (so far). The video here is of the Floyd in their geezerhood, at a reunion show. . .

Wish You Were Here
by Pink Floyd

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
