Sunrise and sunset in Seattle

Sunrise: 5:11 am; Sunset: 9:11 pm.  The longest day of the year.  In Seattle, you can start hearing birds chirping at around 3:15 and within half an hour you see first light.  Sunset is officially just after nine, but you can still see daylight to the north until after 10:00.  It's summer! Excelsior!

The Russians know how to sell tampons (listen up Madison Avenue)

By Mona Goldwater, Social Mores Ed.

The Russians have their own take on tampon commercials. . . not fields of wildflowers, close-ups of dates nuzzling, horse riding, or dancing.

Naked female scientist works with beluga whales in water colder than an ice cube

By Mona Goldwater, Science Editor

"Braving sub-zero temperatures, she has thrown caution — and her clothes — to the wind to tame two beluga whales in a unique and controversial experiment.
"Natalia Avseenko, 36, was persuaded to strip naked as marine experts believe belugas do not like to be touched by artificial materials such as diving suits.
"The skilled Russian diver took the plunge as the water temperature hit minus 1.5 degrees Centigrade."

OK, naked, that makes sense. Mostly.  But jumping into 30° water? I waded in Puget Sound yesterday. It was about 50°. My legs were numb. She is jumping in water twenty degrees colder. "The average human could die if left in sub-zero temperature sea water for just five minutes."

"However, Natalia is a yoga expert and used meditation techniques to hold her breath and stay under water for an incredible ten minutes and 40 seconds."

Yoga. You run around naked and look good doing it; you swim around in water colder than an ice cube; and, you hold your breath for ten minutes? Why aren't we all doing this?

Poem: Survival

by Jack Brummet

Salvation lies
In remaining unblinded

To the treachery
Massing around you:

The enemy without,
Calculating your fall

And the traitor within,
Beating in your chest.

My De Facto Father

By Jack Brummet, Family Life Ed.

I saw my mom, Betty Jones Brummet, yesterday on Father's Day. She has been my de facto father for 50 years (and is about to turn 90). Here she is with her latest girly quilt project. She makes more macho ones for the fellas.  It seemed just right to see her on father's day because she literally had to fill that role for three young kids.  I remember my father pretty well, from about age six to ten 1/2, when he died.  My sister, 22 months younger, I believe has a lot of memories, but my brother, a few years younger does not remember him.

It's Great To Be Alive—The Official Safety Manual

By Jack Brummet, Ephemera Editor

Sure, the cover of this little instructional booklet makes it look like an upbeat little tome.  But once you open it up, the casualties are high: deaths, maiming, molestation, chemical burns, suffocation,  and even a shoot-out.  This little pamphlet operates on the same principles as Red Asphalt: scare the little buggers into safety.  It almost feels like Jack Chick was a creative consultant on this one...

After the appearance of the police officer on page 2, the real mayhem begins.
