The Binster is back--> Osama bin Laden makes a new video appearance & is reportedly tired-looking (have you looked at Dubyah lately?)

President Bush and Sheikh Osama bin Laden in happier times

A new al-Qaeda videotape posted Sunday on a militant Web site featured a short, undated clip of Osama bin Laden praising martyrdom. An A.P. report said bin Laden looked weary.

Bin Laden glorified those who die in the name of jihad, or holy war, saying even the Prophet Muhammad "had been wishing to be a martyr." "The happy (man) is the one that God has chosen him to be a martyr," added bin Laden, who was filmed outdoors wearing army fatigues.

You may remember Donald Rumsfeld's spontaneous poem on finding Osama:

Where is Osama bin Laden?

We do know of certain knowledge
That he is either in Afghanistan
Or in some other country
Or dead.

I can't find the video yet, but did locate Osama bin Laden's appearance on The Family Guy.

A great Devo video & lyrics for Come Back Jonee

I recently picked up a couple of Devo albums (a twofer: Duty Now For The Future/New Traditionalists) and have been enjoying renewing my acquaintance. You'd think Devo would be the most dated of all the bands from the 70s/early 80s. They sound amazingly good; they've aged well. One of my favorite tunes from their early albums is Come Back Jonee. . .a version--it's not quite a cover (I wonder if they had to pay Chuck Berry royalties?)--but a transformation of Johnny Be Good (similar in spirit to maybe Anne Sexton's Tranformations). They pack a lot of drama into one small song.

Gerald Casale, who co-wrote much of Devo's material, along with Mark Mothersbaugh, said that Come Back Jonee uses 50s rock and roll metaphors to mourn the passing of John F.Kennedy.

On a side note, 23 seconds into the video, you'll see and hear the loudest mike bump I've ever heard. It such a weird sound, it could almost be Foley'd in...it's a clank sound--I'm used to mike bumps sounding pretty percussive with a lot of bottom end...

Come Back Jonee

jonee went to the pawnshop
bought himself a guitar
now he's gonna go far
you gotta love 'em and leave 'em
sometimes you deceive 'em
you made her cry
jonee you're bad
you're gonna make her sad
jonee jumped in his datsun
drove out on the expressway
went head-on into a semi
his guitar is all that's left now
he made her cry
now she calls his name
jonee you're to blame

Neil Young/Stephen Stills talk about Buffalo Springfield (with lyrics to Young's Bufflo Springfield Again and a video of For What It's Worth)

Stephen Stills and his on-again off-again long-time bandmate Neil Young reminisce about the days of Buffalo Springfield. The last video is a promotional film for For What It's worth.

Interview Clip Three:

Buffalo Springfield play For What It's Worth from a 1967 promo video:

Buffalo Springfield Again
By Neil Young

Used to play
in a rock 'n' roll band,
But they broke up.
We were young and we were wild,
It ate us up.
Now I'm not saying
who was right or wrong.

Looking out on a big green lawn,
Girls and boys
Playing in the afternoon sun,
Life's a joy
I heard an old song
playing on the radio.

Buffalo Springfield again.

I'd like to see those guys again,
And give it a shot.
Maybe now we can show the world,
What we've got.
But I'd just like to play
for the fun we had.

Buffalo Springfield again.
Buffalo Springfield again.

Country Joe McDonald Gives A Shout Out For Peace (Woodstock 1969) with lyrics to I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag (next stop Vietnam)

Country Joe McDonald (who I often saw around town when I lived in Berkeley) performs his "Feel like I'm fixin' to die rag" at the Woodstock Festival. Country Joe was pressed into service solo when other scheduled performers were mired in traffic. That also accounts for John Sebastian's completely stoned performance--he didn't know he would be performing until the organizers leaned on him to fill some time for the half a million music-thirsty fans.

Feel Like I'm Fixing To Die Rag (Next Stop Vietnam)
by Country Joe & the Fish

Come on all of you big strong men
Uncle Sam needs your help again
he's got himself in a terrible jam
way down yonder in Viet Nam so
put down your books and pick up a gun we're
gonna have a whole lotta fun

(CHORUS)
And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for
don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die

Come on generals, let's move fast
your big chance has come at last
now you can go out and get those reds
cos the only good commie is the one that's dead and
you know that peace can only be won when we've
blown 'em all to kingdom come

Come on wall street don't be slow
why man this war is a go-go
there's plenty good money to be made by
supplying the army with the tools of its trade
let's hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
they drop it on the Viet Cong

Come on mothers throughout the land
pack your boys off to Viet Nam
come on fathers don't hesitate
send your sons off before it's too late
and you can be the first ones on your block
to have your boy come home in a box.

Happy 108th Birthday Duke Ellington!

click duke to enlarge

Duke Ellington would have been 108 years old today (born April 29, 1899, died May 24, 1974). He is usually considered one of the most important figures to emerge from jazz scene in the twentieth century. Duke, however, didn't usually speak of jazz, but instead liked to consider his work just music. Jazz was too narrow for Ellington, although he created some of the best jazz yet, as well as nurtured hundreds of young musicians. Here is a YouTube video of his 1942 band:

The Band: Video and lyrics to Don't Do It

The Band often played Don't Do It as an encore. It was the last song they played (albeit in a truncated, one-verse version) at their Last Waltz in 1976. It was usually sung in a dual lead by Rick Danko and Levon Helm. If you'll excuse Robbie Robertson's posing here, this is a decent, but not definitive version. . .

Baby don't you do it, don't do it
Don't you break my heart
Pleeeeease don't do it, don't you break my heart

A sacrifice would make you happy if nothing for myself
Now you wanna leave me for the love of someone else
My pride is all gone whether I'm right or wrong
I need you baby to keep on keepin' on

You know I'm trying to my best
Oh i'm trying to do my best
Don't do it, don't you break my heart
Pleeeeease don't do it, don't you break my heart

My biggest mistake was loving you too much and letting you know
Now you got me where you want me and you won't let me go
If my heart was made of glass well then you'd surely see
How much heartache and misery, girl, you've been causing me

While I've been trying to do my best
Well I've tried to do my best
Don't do it, don't you break my heart

Pleeeeease don't do it, don't you break my heart

Go down to the river and there I be
I'm gonna jump in girl, but you don't care bout me
Open up your eyes
Can't ya see I love ya?
Open up you heart, girl
Can't ya see I need ya?

Oh baby don't do it, do it, do it
Don't you break my heart
Pleeeeease don't do it don't you break my heart

My biggest mistake was loving you too much and letting you know
Now you got me where you want me and you won't let me go
If my heart was made of glass well then you'd surely see
How much heartache and misery, girl, you've been causing me

While I've been trying to do my best
You know I've tried to do my best
Don't do it, don't you break my heart
Pleeeeease don't do it, don't you break my heart

Jackson Browne Video & Lyrics: Running On Empty

This is one of those anthems for which I am a sucker. I was never a big fan of JB, but I've always loved this tune.

Running On Empty

by Jackson Browne

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that'll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
I look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Honey you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind
You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find
Running into the sun but I'm running behind

Video: Neal Cassady's famous "Great Sex Letter" to Jack Kerouac

Some folks created a video based on a reading of Neal Cassady's famous "Great Sex Letter" to Jack Kerouac. This is classic Cassady. Kerouac often said the letters from Neal were what transmogrified his writing, from his earlier Wolfe-esque work to the spontaneous prose for which he became famous. The letter, as many of Cassady's were, is a hoot. . .

The Cars: Just What I Needed - Song, Photomontage and lyrics

click 2x to play the vid

Just What I Needed

I don't mind you coming here
and wasting all my time
'cause when you're standing oh so near
I kinda lose my mind
it's not the perfume that you wear
it's not the ribbons in your hair
I don't mind you coming here
and wasting all my time
I don't mind you hanging out
and talking in your sleep
it doesn't matter where you've been
as long as it was deep
you always knew to wear it well
you look so fancy I can tell
I don't mind you hanging out
and talking in your sleep
I guess you're just what I needed
I needed someone to feed
I guess you're just what I needed
I needed someone to bleed
