ATIT Reheated: Alien Lore from 2010

By Jack Brummet
Alien Lore & Unexplained Phenomena Editor

[thanks Jeff Clinton for the find]

Commander George W. Hoover, the "grandfather" of satellite technology--a friend and close associate of Dr. Werner von Braun--revealed that the truth about Roswell is a lot weirder, and closer to the accounts long ago dismissed as wack-job conspiracies, than we ever guessed.

Hoover worked many years with with the U.S. Office of Naval Research, won a bazillion awards and medals, made huge contributions to atmospheric balloon research and to Werner von Braun's Project Orbiter--which led to the launch of Explorer I.   After he retired from the Navy, he worked with NASA and various companies in the military-industrial-space complex. He helped develop the first flight simulators, and was a very accomplished pilot himself.

In the 1950's, Dr. Werner Von Braun said "Everybody talks about satellites, then nobody does anything. George Hoover's contribution should never be forgotten."   The Vice Chief of the Navy, Admiral Harry D. Fel, said praised Hoover's contributions and organizational and logistical  brilliance.

Commander Hoover is seated at the far left at the table

Some UFOlogists believe that Hoover also assisted Fred Durant in the early UFO government study group "The Robertson Panel" as well as other official--both public and secret--UFO studies.

" [Hoover offered] the driving spirit, organizing genius, imagination and foresight which set in motion the mighty effort toward the first man-made earth satellite, man's first step toward space flight."  - Vice Chief of the Navy, Admiral Harry D. Felt
According to Anthony Bragalia, and Aurimas Svitojus, George W. Hoover Jr. recently revealed some remarkable tidbits about his father, including: the fact that Hoover Sr., in his official capacity, learned the real story (if there is one) about the Roswell crash sometime in the 1950s, or even earlier.  He also told his son that he had seen "evidence about the Roswell crash event that convinced him that it was neither a balloon nor a hoax."  Hoover, Sr., however would not go beyond that, and offered no further details.  George Hoover also says his dad had "both a personal and professional interest in UFOs."

George Hoover Jr. says that his father spoke numerous times of the Roswell crash during the 1960s. Remember, this was well before the explosion of UFOlogy/coverups/conspiracies in the mainstream media in the 80's.  In the 50's and 60's, it was rarely spoken of, and UFOs and Alien Lore were not a part of pop culture, or the American psyche in general.

An article by Anthiony Bragalia says there may be evidence that Hoover assisted Fred Durant of the early UFO government study group "The Robertson Panel" as well as on other official UFO studies.

In 1995 George W. Hoover Sr. left his papers with an associate of the History Channel. Some of Hoover's hints about Roswell that he had made to his own son were later corroborated in private, off-the-record conversations that Commander Hoover had with researcher Dr. William J. Birnes.

Commander George Hoover finally revealed what he really knew about Roswell. He explained the truth, or at least whatever version of the truth he had learned about decades ago.  According to more than one source, that truth was mainly the following:

  • UFOs are not the "biggest secret" the government has been sitting on--it is the entities behind them (or, as wel prefer to call them, The Greys, that are of most concern
  • Roswell was  a crash event of "visitors from somewhere else"
  • The Greys were "not so much interplanetary as much as they were...time travelers." They visitors had transcended time!
  • The visitors are clearly "from the future." There is reason to believe that they may even be "us" from a future Earth, and are not actually visiting, but Coming Home.
  • These "future humans" have the ability to "manipulate reality around us."
  • The government feared the intentions and abilities of the "visitors."  Wouldn't you?
  • These visitors are able to use the power of consciousness in extraordinary ways to morph reality.
  • And, maybe the best, or, most hopeful part:  human beings are far more powerful in potential than we ever dreamed. We can't yet even comprehend our amazing future capabilities.

ATIT Reheated: Robert, the Sentient Doll (and probably inspiration for Chucky)

By Jack Brummet
Unexplained and paranormal editor

Robert The Doll just about had to be the inspiration for the Twilight Zone episodes "Living Doll" and another one I remember but can't track down (it was probably in Night Gallery).  In "Lucky Doll," the doll says "My name is Talky Tina, and I'm going to kill you."

Robert clearly spawned Chucky.  Just about every TV horror series does a doll story sometime [1], or a few times, in their run.   Thanks to frequent paranormal, alien lore, and news of the bizarre tipster, Jeff Clinton, for this one.  I had heard of Robert a few times before, but never dug in until Jeff hooked me up.

In Key West, FLA, there is a history museum inside a fort.  In the fort "lives" Robert, the Haunted Doll.    He was made, or maybe bought, by a family servant for a five year old, Gene Otto, in 1904. From early on, people claimed that Robert was a disturbing presence,  His eye blinks, giggles, and moans have been written about over the last hundred years. Wherever he's "lived." there have been reports of strange doings.

Robert the Doll photo by Rob O'Neal, Key West Art & Historical Society press release dated September 20, 2004.

Gene Otto died in 1974.  Robert ended up  in a glass case in the museum.  robertthedoll.org says (supported by many letters from witnesses) that he doesn’t like to have his picture taken.  He may drain the battery or jam you camera, or create other small misfortunes during your visit.  Of course most people report no problem taking his picture.  Robert may roil the waters, but he is no Chucky, or Living Doll.

Hey, you can even buy your own Robert.  The Key West Art Historical Society will sell you one.  Click here to see their Robert The Doll merch.

[1] Some TV/movie Doll types you may have seen:
1. Dolls made to replicate a lost loved one, such as a child, spouse or sibling.
2. Dolls made from human components, dead or...maybe not. ...
3. A dollmaker or owner prefers them over humans (thinking here of Gepetteo and Pinocchio).
4. Dolls possessed by a malevolent spirit, that have become sentient/animated and actively malevolent. (Chucky).

La Isla de la Muñecas/The Island of the Dolls—the story of an island possibly haunted by sentient dolls

By Jack Brummet
Unexplained Phenomena Editor

Thanks to Jeff Clinton for the idea for this story.  The story originally appeared on All This Is That September 13, 2011.

South of México Distrito Federal (Mexico City) in the extensive network of Xochimilco canals, is a small island called La Isla de la Muñecas.  The Island of the Dolls is a seriously spooky place.

The man who created the island of dolls—Don Julian Santana—often told visitors that he was haunted by the ghost of a little girl who drowned in one of the nearby canals.  That haunting, real or imagined, led him to eventually decorate almost every tree growing on the island with old and  mutilated dolls.  Most people who visit the island say that they have a feeling that they’re constantly being watched.

Although Don Julian was married, he abandoned his family and life and ended up living the last 50 years of his life as a hermit on his island, working on his strange project.

Some people say he would fish the dolls from the water because he though they were real children.  In fact, he was collecting and placing them around his home as a shrine and to assuage the spirit/ghost of the little girl that he thought tormented him.

He grew vast amounts of fruit and vegetables in the lush gardens around his house, and, eventually, began to trade his fruit and vegetables for old dolls in hopes the dolls would form vehicles for spirits to keep the deceased girl company and prevent further evil from descending upon the island.  He would also often buy dolls and rummage through garbage dumps to find more dolls.

Local legend has it that Santana died under mysterious circumstances—that the spirit-inhabited dolls went Chucky on him.  Others people swear they have witnessed the dolls become sentient at night and that the dolls themselves have taken Santana's place as caretaker of their island.

In 2001, Don Julian Santana was found dead by his nephew in the same canal in which the little girl had drowned.

As part of the World Heritage site of the islands and canals of Xochimilco, Santana's Island of the Dolls is now one of the world’s weirdest tourist attractions (visitors often bring more dolls). Some tourists who have visited the island claim that the dolls whisper to you [1], and that you must offer them a gift upon setting foot on the island.

I've visited several World Heritage sites over the years.  This is the next one on my list.

[1]  This reminds me of another story I wrote about not long ago--the story of Robert The Sentient Doll (which also has a Chucky connection).  It is one of the ten most read stories on ATIT.   You can find that story here.

President Obama talks about "going Bulworth"

By Jack Brummet

Thanks to Jeff Clinton for passing this along. We can dream can't we? Bulworth refers to Warren Beatty's great movie about a Senator who goes completely off the rails.

From the Politico playbook newsletter: "In private, [Obama] has talked longingly of 'going Bulworth ,' a reference to a little-remembered 1998 Warren Beatty movie ['Bulworth'] about a senator who risked it all to say what he really thought. While Mr. Beatty's character had neither the power nor the platform of a president, the metaphor highlights Mr. Obama's desire to be liberated from what he sees as the hindrances on him. 'Probably every president says that from time to time,' said David Axelrod ... 'It's probably cathartic just to say it. But the reality is that while you want to be truthful, you want to be straightforward, you also want to be practical about whatever you're saying.' The cinematic allusion seems striking given Mr. Obama's rejection of Hollywood's version of the White House, what one former aide calls 'the Harry Potter theory of the presidency,' which suggests that he could wave a wand and make things happen."

A Bulworth rap from the film:

"Obscenity? The rich is getting richer and richer and richer
While the middle class is getting more poor
Making billions and billions and billions of bucks
Well my friend if you weren't already rich at the start
Well that situation just sucks
Cause the richest motherf****r in five of us
Is getting ninety f***in' eight percent of it
And every other motherf****r in the world is left to wonder
Where the f*** we went with it
Obscenity? I'm a Senator
I gotta raise $10,000 a day every day I'm in Washington
I ain't getting it in South Central
I'm gettin it in Beverly Hills
So I'm votin for them in the Senate the way they want me too
And-and-and I'm sending them my bills
But we got babies in South Central dying as young as they do in Peru
We got public schools that are nightmares
We got a Congress that ain't got a clue
We got kids with submachine guns
We got militias throwing bombs
We got Bill just gettin all weepy
We got Newt blaming teenage moms
We got factories closing down
Where the hell did all the good jobs go?
Well, I'll tell you where they went
My contributors make more profits makin, makin, makin,
Hirin' kids in Mexico
And a brother can work in fast food
If he can't invent computer games
But what we used to call America
That's going down the drains
How's a young man gonna meet his financial responsibilities
Workin for motherf****n' Burger King?
He ain't! And please don't even start with that school s**t
There aint no education going on up in that motherfucker
Obscenity? We got a million brothers in prison
I mean, the walls are really rockin'
But you can bet your ass they'd all be out
If they could pay for Johnny Cochran
The constitution is supposed to give them an equal chance
Well, that ain't gonna happen for sure
Ain't it time to take a little from the rich motherf****r
And give a little to the poor?
I mean, those boys over there on the monitor
They want a government smaller and weak
But they be speakin for the richest 20 percent
When they pretend they're defendin' the meek
Now, sh*t, f**k, c***sucker, that's the real obscenity
Black folks livin with every day
Trying to believe a mothe****in' word Democrats and Republicans say
Obscenity? I'm Jay Billington Bulworth And I've come to say
The Democratic party's got some s**t to pay."

How to hypnotize a chicken

By Jack Brummet, Unexplained Phenomena Ed.

Thanks to Jeff Clinton!

An illustration of a hypnotized chicken from an 18th century book by the famous Jesuit scientist Athanasius Kircher

OK, it's not technically hypnotizing chickens, but more properly, causing tonic immobility[1].   It is related to snake charming, which you have probably seen in cartoons, or B Movies.

A chicken can be put into a trance/hypnotized/lulled into tonic immobility by holding its head against the ground, and then drawing a line along the ground with a stick or a finger, starting at its beak and then running out in front of the chicken. A chicken hypnotized like this will will sit in a trance for anywhere between between 15 seconds and 30 minutes.

In the The  1985 Old Farmer’s Almanac, Linda Riggins wrote about hypnotized chickens:
“A bird will stay hypnotized for a couple of seconds, minutes, or hours,” says White, although in her demonstrations they’re “out” for only minutes.  Regardless of the method used, a sudden movement or loud noise will bring the  chicken out of the hypnotic trance.

"White adds, 'Pheasants go out faster than any other bird. Wild pheasants are  very nervous and high-strung, and usually very easy to hypnotize.' In her  demonstrations, she is protective of pheasants, because after they come out of  hypnosis, they are likely to hurt themselves unless they are carefully  monitored. Noting that domestic birds are more difficult to hypnotize than wild  ones, she suggests that one reason may be wild birds are using a survival skill  when they submit to hypnosis.

"White has reported the results of her experiments at several New Jersey  science conferences and fairs. In one of her studies of 11 birds, the heart and  respiration rates, when measured five minutes after hypnosis, were significantly  lower than in the pre-hypnotic state. For example, in a Bantam White Cochin  cock, the heart rate before hypnosis was 457 beats per minute and after hypnosis  372. The rates for this bird’s respiration were 22 and 20 breaths per minute,  respectively. The temperatures of nine of these birds went down or were  unchanged in the posthypnotic state."
Interestingly enough, in press briefings, the U.S. military--when trying to avoid divulging information, gives reporters briefings with 20 minutes of intentionally dull PowerPoint presentations and 5 minutes left at the end for questions from anyone who is still awake. Those presentations are called hypnotizing chickens around The Pentagon.

[1] From the Wikipedia page on tonic immobility:  "Tonic immobility is a natural state of paralysis that animals enter, in most cases when presented with a threat. Some scientists relate it to mating in certain animals like the shark.

"Some sharks can be placed in a tonic state. The shark remains in this state of paralysis for an average of fifteen minutes before it recovers. Scientists have exploited this phenomenon to study shark behaviour. The effects of chemical shark repellent have been studied to test effectiveness and to narrow down dose sizes, concentrations, and time to awaken."
